High Availability Hosting with DRBD

Sun, 27 Jan 2008 08:15:19 -0500
The term high availability is the buzz word nowadays. Nobody tolerates downtime, whether it is the owner of a web site, owner of a server or owner of a data center. The challenge is how you can offer the least down time and the term "high availbility", has it all.

Using expert input from the leading research company Marketing Experiments, once a Domain Name has been selected customers then enter a much simplified and more intuitive order process. The rationale behind the new order process was to follow the Marketing Experiments guidelines of removing friction and reducing anxiety, so customers are only asked for essential information. This new rationale also applies when ordering a UK2 Web Hosting package, where traditionally the order process involved several steps. Now, with UK2.net this order process takes just a few clicks, as customers first place the Web Hosting order and then decide on what domains they would like to use or buy afterwards.

Overselling - what the buyer (you) should know about it

Wed, 28 May 2008 12:55:15 GMT
Overselling basically means to sell beyond the means of delivery. However, that's a little bit oversimplified. Maybe an example will help you get a clearer picture.

The saga described yesterday ended happily today and

everything was solved. For one reason or another the

DC while assigning the IP’s, that I already had has taken

some of these and assigned others to me.

Trust Level Control: Showing Customers Some TLC

The hard truth about Service Level Agreements is that many service providers offer them with little or no consideration of whether their provisions can be met. Companies serious about establishing customer trust need to deliver on their promises.

I have been a dreamhost client for 4 years now and I agree with the reviews
under me about their service entering dangerous waters as of late. No doubt that
their plans are some of the best (and very affordable for those who want quality
but are a little stingy in their spending) to be found, along with their '97
dollars for every refferal' program.

I have been reading on their site about numerous server upgrades and outages
too, but they seem to be getting back on their feet (although it seems that
every sever outage has been on a server that I am not hosted on...) and I won't
be suprised if they explode with popularity due to their kind and personal
staff, as well as their upbeat employee-owned company ideals.

I highly reccommend them for a personal site, however if you are a company who
can't afford one second of downtime, I suggest waiting a few months untill they
are done upgrading their servers.

All in all, I'll never leave dreamhost.

Web Hosting Mergers and Acquisitions - April 2008

Sat, 31 May 2008 11:30:00 -0500

April was a bit more active than March. I am getting some good "vibes" pre HostingCon and ISPCON was better than expected. My firm closed a couple of transactions which is always nice. So here we go...

Laguna Niguel, CA -- Alentus Corporation (ALNS) acquired Austin, Texas-based Website Source, Inc. (Shared) and SpeedFox, Inc. (Dedicated). The deals add $2.6M in annual revenue to Alentus. Tom Millitzer President of NCC-New Commerce Communications (This blogger) represented Website Source and Speedfox in the transactions.

Dublin, Ireland - Digiweb, has acquired web hosting Novara, as well as its host.ie and register.ie brands. Digiweb serves 22,000 hosting customers, 32,000 broadband customers and has 140 Employees.

Boston, MA - ABRY Partners acquired Raleigh, NC based Hosted Solutions for $140 million. Hosted Solutions has several East Coast data centers and provides managed services. Paul Stapleton of DH Capital represented Hosted Solutions in the transaction.

Scottsdale, AZ - Vilocity Interactive Inc. recently expanded its client roster and presence on the East Coast with the acquisition of a Boston-based WebNesting a hosting and site development firm.

San Mateo, CA – SAS provider Etelos, Inc. (Public, OTC: ETLO) completed reverse merger into Tripath Technology. Company has a market cap of $210 million.

Nottinghamshire UK - Timico Group acquired Twang.net Limited, a UK-based a specialist in fully managed solutions.

Renton, WA - Parallels, has acquired ModernGigabyte, the ModernBill automated billing system and other hosting automation solutions. ModernGigabyte provides software to nearly 15,000 hosting resellers with more than 2 million customers worldwide.

Plano, TX - Layered Technologies, Inc., acquired of FastServers.net, a Chicago-based managed hosting company. I ran into FastServers founder Ian Andrusyk at ISPCON…he was very relaxed.

Mississauga, ON - Hostopia (TSX: H) acquired the customer assets of Web hosting provider Luxomovera, operating as uplinkearth.com. Reportedly an all-cash offer that will migrate some 12,500 customers Hostopia's facilities.

Fairfax, VA - mindSHIFT Technologies acquired Collaboration Online, better known as groupSPARK. Collaboration Online provides Shared & Dedicated Exchange data center and other server side services.

Obviously not all inclusive - but from the NCC files.

This only means one thing. It is easier now to find the right web host for your application. The possibility of quality web hosting companies separating themselves from the rest of the industry is anticipated. If this is done, the unprofessional and incompetent ones will suffer.

Featured web hosting resellers Items

Well, my first official review. In this review I will be covering a brief
outline of the hosting website, hostican.

Ill start things off by simply saying, wow. In these first few days, I could
not be more pleased. I switched from using the hosting company HostMonster.com.
Let me confidently say that I made the right switch.

First things first, service. I had to call HostMonster about 2 times initially
when I joined them. What a pain! There was a line every time I needed to talk to
a representative, and Ill add that their Hold music is just plain awful. When
I switched to hostican, I called them up, bam, talking with a person
immediately. No waits, no ear-ripping music, nothing except good ol people to
talk to. Not to mention their demeanor and manners. I must say, my experience
with their service has up to this point been absolutely seamless.

Now lets move on to hosting. The best thing about their hosting, in my eyes, is
the simplicity of their two different plans. They are both relatively
inexpensive, come loaded with lots of useful features, and have some great
resources available. The base plan comes with 200GB of disk space, 2 domain
names, one FREE domain, 2,500GB of monthly bandwidth, along with being
e-commerce enabled. Impressive. Remember, that is just the basic plan, only
$6.95 per month.

Now I will admit I havent had a whole lot of time to mess around with the
control panel, however they do offer a demo control panel for anyone interested
in looking at that, just go to their site. Now there was one feature that
ultimately switched me to hostican - Wordpress. Im sure there are lots of other
dedicated hosts that offer wordpress, but hostican made it so simple, it was
absolutely unbelievable. You just go onto control panel, click install
wordpress, and bam, there you go. Dont forget that hostican also provides tons
of free video tutorials on everything from setting up email addresses to
managing files in control panel. I however will only be using the WordPress
features, so the rest of the control panel is up to you to test.

The last thing I will write about for now that really grabbed my attention was
their affiliate program. It is quite amazing I must say. Its free to setup, you
dont even have to have a domain hosted with them to make an account. Basically,
they pay you X amount of dollars per person that signs up using your unique
link. The rates are $70 for the first 4 people you get and $90 for everyone
after that (This resets every month). Also, you can get higher rates if you are
able to refer over 10 people every month. Talk about big money! I signed up for
this right away, and I have their advertisement in my top header that goes to my
unique link. If you sign up under that, you help me and you dont have to pay
extra fees, hidden fees, nothing like that. So if you are in need of a host and
are in a giving mood, feel free to click that Ad up in the top header for
hostican.com.

Well, thats my very simple and basic review. My overall impressions of hostican
are perfect. Up till now things have been smooth, simple, easy, fast,
everything. I would definitely recommend their services to you, and remember,
click my affiliate link to help me out! Overall 10/10, excellent hosting
company.

SixApart, WordPress and 37Signals Support OpenID; Why Not 1&1 and GoDaddy?

Wed, 07 Mar 2007 12:09:00 -0400

I've been reading a lot about OpenID, a free, decentralized framework for managing digital identities. You start with an URI (think of it as a master username) and store your password and other creditials with an OpenID provider. You can then log into any OpenID enabled service with your URI. The service will fetch whatever credentials it needs from your identity provider.

Simon Willison wrote a great post on cool things you can do with OpenID. My favorite is restricted single sign on. Simon suggested that if everyone in an organization had "username.internal.example.org" OpenIDs, all internal apps behind the firewall could be configured to grant automatic access to such users. This eliminates the hassle of creating/deleting accounts on each service for incoming/departing employees. Couldn't GoDaddy use a similar method to apply the same logins across its many services?

I'm also intrigued by Kai Hendry's comment that maybe OpenID can be used for brokering payments. This would allow access pass holders to view content, download songs, etc across multiple sites. Not that this technology isn't already available, but OpenID would save subscribers from having to keep track of different logins for different networks.

Anyway, Microsoft announced last month that it would make Windows Cardspace interoperable with OpenID. A couple of weeks later, AOL announced its support as well. SixApart is in (in fact, OpenID creator Brad Fitzpatrick also developed LiveJournal, and is SixApart's chief architect). And Digg. And ImageShack, WordPress, Technorati, SmugMug, 37Signals...

Recently I signed up for isabel.wang.name as my OpenID through FreeYourID (which I read about on TechCrunch). If nothing else, they managed to sell me a .name domain. My question is, why isn't 1&1 in this market as well?

Using Google, you can do the conversions quicker. Just type into Google “5 GB to MB“. The answer you need to type into cPanel’s quota box would be “5120” which is 5,120 MB. If all goes well you should see the message:

free web host reviews Products we recommend

I've been with hostican for 6 months now with 99.99% uptime which is tracked by
three 3rd party monitoring systems at 5 minute intervals.

The support is excellent. I've called at all hours including 3am to get a live
person. NONE of their support is outsourced and I have not had to wait more than
60 seconds on hold to get a real, live, not outsourced person to help me.

They use cpanel 11 and are quick about updates. Everything is smooth. website
speed is super fast and i've used 500GB of the 2500GB bandwidth plan with NO
PROBLEMS AT ALL. I've also used 15gb of space. The server remains fast, speedy,
no downtime, and great support.

100% A+ for hostican from me. I do not hesitate to recommend hostican to any one

iWeb You A Merry Christmas -- Santa comes to Montreal

Fri, 21 Dec 2007 21:31:00 -0400

iWeb Group Inc. (TSX-V: IWB) posted its 2007 fiscal results (ended Sept 30th) just in time for the Christmas party.

How did iWeb do?

  • Revenue was $9.8 million, an increase of 71% over 2006.
  • Adjusted EBITDA was $2.8 million, 29% vs. 25% in 2006
  • Gross profit margin was 57%, compared to 54%.
  • Revenue improvement was driven solely by organic sales growth.
  • 80% of revenue from dedicated hosting, shared and colo 10% ea.

What is in Eric Chouinard's (iWeb, President and CEO) Christmas stocking? Exactly what was at the top of his list, $4.1 million (net proceeds of a recent public offering) to build out the firm's 3rd data center in Montreal, should hold another 850 cabinets.

Above the iWeb water cooler the note stated "Le parti de Noël programme comme planifié."

"The Christmas party is scheduled as planned."

And in passing I also wish all the WHIR folk, the readers and all of your families a merry and safe Christmas - Tom

How to Migrate Your Linux Website to Another Hosting Company

Wed, 07 May 2008 12:48:34 GMT
A complete migration involves transferring the site data itself, meaning all the HTML and possibly PHP and MySQL files and CGI programs. You also need to modify the Domain Name System (DNS) information for the site and for the routing of the site email. DNS holds information that translates IP addresses to human-readable domain names. For Web site migration, the two important DNS records are the address (A) record, which tells the browser the IP address of the Web server, and the mail exchange (MX) record, which tells mail servers how to route the email.

Anyway, if you have used Godaddy domain registration service or hosting products, you may have noticed the difficulty in to the final destination in checkout process. I’ve noticed some problems too. Here’s a pretty detailed criticism of GoDaddy’s 16-step checkout process which may be “brainless marketing at its finest.” A great article on the sheer stupidity of the GoDaddy checkout process. They truly are the 16 gates of hell. The author asks, “Why would a company do this to its customers?”

Currently, hostican hosting had upgraded their hosting plan to over 2000GB storage space for their most basic shared hosting plan. 10 months ago, hostican hosting is only offering 200GB storage space, and its now grown to over 2000GB storage. That is 10 times the storage space. This doesn’t effect the hosting services quality, and indeed you can view the previous month hostican uptime and hostican speed test report to find out more about hostican server performance.

Server Monitoring

Thu, 05 Jan 2006 00:00:00 EST
Monitoring is a very important part of the web hosting business. We are not talking about monitoring log files or so. What we are talking about is monitoring services and uptime and what to do with the information.

web hosting resellers Items For Viewing

I've been with hostgator since around August of 2004. I signed up with a
reseller account to use as hosting for both myself and clients. My problems
began about a year ago with them, sometime in February or March of 2005 when one
of my sites was getting too much traffic. Now, I'm no fool. I understand that
shared hosting oversells and anyone who uses too many resources, even if still
within their quota, gets kicked off. What really shocked me, though, was no
warning. Not even emailing me after they had done it. Nothing, nada. I found out
by a member of the site that was suspended, someone I didn't even know, tracking
down my phone number and calling me.

I went to a dedicated server after that, but I kept my hostgator account for the
sites that were already hosted on it - about three client sites, as well as this
site right here.

Two days ago I come to post a blog and hmm, I get the suspended page. That's
weird. I check my email - no notices there. I log into their billing system -
nope, account not past due. What the heck? So I go to their online support chat
and ask them what's going on. I'm informed that I haven't paid my invoice. What
invoice? I have no invoice. I check my bank and I see that I in fact have not
paid them since January. But man, I could've swore I put it on automatic pay.
And hey, if there's no invoice, how can I pay anyway?! Isn't this a problem on
their end? They tell me I need to email sales.

Okay... so I email sales. 12 hours later, they email me back and inform me I
have an invoice, charging me all the way back to October. Uhhh? I KNOW I paid in
January, I have it in my bank statement. I check their billing system, and they
don't even have a backlog of that payment. Something really funky is going on
now. Their system is screwed up, but no matter who I talk to (and oh, I've
talked to everyone) nobody seems to know what's going on. Sales doesn't talk to
support, online support doesn't talk to phone support, so who the hell knows.

Strangely enough, while on the phone with a support guy who informed me I just
need to pay the invoice and then dispute it afterwards, I received an email from
a different support person that my account had been reactivated, and thank you
for the payment. Whaaat? Uh, whatever. At this point I'm just going to take what
I can get and run. Now I at least have backups of all my sites and am moving
them.

It's just astounding how bad a service this has been. I even posted on their
forums about it, in their "Customer Review" section, and it gets MOVED to
another section because I can't post a bad customer review simply because I
haven't paid. HELLO. I WANT TO PAY, JUST NOT MORE THAN I OWE. I NEED AN INVOICE.

Other problems I've had? Well, let's see. About a week ago my sites reverted
back a day and I could get no explanation on why. I had JUST looked at my access
logs the day before, happy about a new site that was already getting hits, and
the next day - logs are back to a day before. Weird. I contact online support
(bad idea, since it's always horrible support) and they have no idea. I guess I
imagined things?

UPDATE 4-20-07: Well, they finally just simply decided to take their bogus bonus
from my credit card that was filed with them, despite the fact that it's
incorrect, I didn't approve of the payment, or anything else. I've never seen
such bad service, support in my life. I can't even be bothered to dispute it
it's just so amazingly horrible.

UPDATE 10-18-07: I'm still with them, why? I don't know - so lazy when it comes
to my own websites. Anyway, so a couple days ago I notice my "main" reseller
account, the site is completely missing. Email is no longer working. I log into
Cpanel to see that it appears my whole site has disappeared. Cute!
